Native Title Application - "Gomeroi People"

23 May 2012

On 20 January 2012 representatives of the Gomeroi people filed an application in the National Native Title Tribunal which seeks to have the Federal Court recognise Native Title over the area shown below in the map.

Persons or companies who hold proprietary interests over land in the area that is the subject of the application will shortly receive notification of the application from the National Title Tribunal. Upon receiving notification land holders can choose to become a respondent party to the application but must do so by no later than 15 August 2012. Any eventual finding of Native Title will not detract from any existing property rights such as free hold or exclusive perpetual leases. However if Native Title is found then it may result in Native Title operating “along side” existing rights such as non exclusive grazing licences.

Our Litigation Director Mr Brendan Moylan is currently dealing with numerous enquiries from potentially affected clients who hold land within the application area. Please contact our office if you have any concerns in relation to the application.
